TUSCOLA CUSD 301 COVID-19 UPDATE:

July 1, 2020 - Wow, can you believe it is July? I hope all of you are having a great summer. Can you believe the last time our students sat in a classroom was March 12th? We have been waiting for guidance from the Illinois State Board of Education on what school will look like in August. The guidance has been released and it looks as if we will be in-person learning to begin the school year. There are some requirements that school districts must follow to open for in-person instruction. Please remember these are guidelines set for our school district not set by our school district. If you do not agree with the guidelines, please reach out to your Representatives to express your views. Here are the guidelines set for in-person learning:

1. Schools must require the use of appropriate personal protective equipment, including face coverings;
2. Prohibit more than 50 individuals from gathering in one space;
3. Require social distancing be observed as much as possible;
4. Require that schools conduct symptom screenings and temperature checks or require that individuals self-certify that they are free of symptoms before entering school buildings; and
5. Require an increase in schoolwide cleaning and disinfection.

This whole process reminded me of the Sammy Hagar song, “I Can’t Drive 55.” Yes, I may be off my rocker again but let me explain. As I was driving to Wisconsin last night for vacation, I ran into road construction. This road construction went on for several miles. As you know, in the construction areas you must follow a certain speed limit. The problem with this stretch of road construction was you would follow the reduced speed and then be allowed to get up to 55 miles per hour. This made you think you were making progress to get out of the road construction zone and back to driving 70. The problem was a mile down the road there was more road construction. Now, you have to reduce your speed again. This seemed to go on for 25 miles. (It probably was only five miles but my lack of patience for not getting there skewed my thinking)

That is how this process has felt. We speed up and make progress and then we are forced to slow down and lose the progress made. Sometimes, the progress is lost because a new guideline clarification is sent out. I want you to know we are working on making the learning process for all students a safe experience. We would like your feedback to help us in this process. Please complete this SURVEY by July 6. We appreciate you taking the time to do this.
